Association for Biodiversity Conservation and Rural Development (ABCARD) has engaged local community members around the Tofala Hill Wildlife Sanctuary in the conservation of Cross River gorilla and Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee. These great apes species are threatened by anthropogenic activities such as poaching/trapping and expansion of farmland into their habitat. These threats have put a lot of pressure to the population of great apes in the sanctuary. In order to address these problems, ABCARD trained local rangers on camera trapping. These will enable them to install camera traps in the target area, that will help to collect data on the populations of gorillas, chimpanzee and other species in the target area. The information gathered will be used to determine the populations dynamics and to make sound decisions for the effective management of the species by the protected area manager. This is all thanks to the financial support from Rewild and Primate Society of Great Britain.
